Billy Campbell rescues 3 men at sea on the eve of the premiere of The Disappeared

13 Sep Billy Campbell rescues 3 men at sea on the eve of the premiere of The Disappeared

On the eve of the world premiere of The Disappeared American actor Billy Campbell, who plays Mannie in the feature film, took part in a dramatic rescue of three men clinging to the bottom of an overturned four-metre sailboat in waters off Massachusetts.

The dramatic rescue took place during the maiden voyage of Campbells’s vessel, the Martha Seabury. On Monday evening, while on route from Lunenburg to Newport for the annual boat show he and his mates saved three men from New Bedford who had sailed to Martha’s Vineyard earlier that day. They were adrift on the ocean after their boat had capsized, without flashlights or a waterproof light to signal for help. Fortunately the crew of the Martha Seabury spotted the men waving their arms for assistance.

Campbell credits Captain Michael Moreland and licensed mariner Paul Bracken with the successful rescue under challenging conditions.

One of the film’s producers, Ralph Holt said, “Billy really is a true sea man. We’re very fortunate that everyone was alright, and Billy will still make it back to Halifax to be on the Red Carpet.”

The Disappeared will premiere at the 32nd Atlantic Film Festival’s Atlantic Gala 7 p.m. Friday, September 14, at the Oxford Theatre in Halifax. A second screening will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 15. The Disappeared tells the story of six men and their struggle to get home after their fishing boat sinks in the North Atlantic. Starring Campbell, The Disappeared cast also includes Canadian star Shawn Doyle alongside local Halifax actors Brian Downey, Ryan Doucette, Gary Levert and Neil Matheson.

Pre-sold to Astral’s The Movie Network and Corus Entertainment’s Movie Central, The Disappeared was produced with the participation of Telefilm Canada, Film Nova Scotia and the Canadian and Nova Scotia tax credit programs, and was developed with added support from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage.

The Disappeared is produced by Gilles Bélanger, Ralph Holt, Walter Forsyth and Karen Franklin. Two Dories Film Inc. is a Nova Scotia company created to produce the theatrical feature film, The Disappeared, for national and international distribution.
