27 Sep Transplanted prairie girl, Shandi Mitchell returns to Edmonton and Vancouver with The Disappeared
Audiences will have a special guest in attendance during the screening of The Disappeared at Edmonton’s and Vancouver’s international film festivals. Shandi Mitchell, Writer and Director of The Disappeared, will take part in the viewing to talk about the film and the very unique way it was made entirely on the open ocean.
“I’m thrilled to be bringing the Atlantic Ocean west”, says Shandi. “I grew up in Edmonton and have family in both cities so this is like a homecoming. East coast, prairie girl returns with sea in hand. Can’t wait to see that big sky and breathe in the Pacific air.”
Also a novelist, Shandi’s debut novel Under This Unbroken Sky was inspired by her family’s own experience after they moved to Alberta from the Ukraine following WWI. The book, now published in multiple languages, achieved international success and won numerous awards including the 2012 Kobzar Literary Award and the 2010 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize (first novel, Canada and the Caribbean).
The Disappeared is the story of six men and their struggle to get home after their fishing boat sinks in the North Atlantic. Mitchell’s story was inspired by a conversation with a ninety-two year old man who had worked on the sea his entire life. She asked him if he had ever been afraid. He looked away and answered “Once. When I had been lost (at sea).”
The Disappeared cast includes Hollywood actor Billy Campbell and Canadian star Shawn Doyle alongside Halifax actors Brian Downey, Gary Levert, Ryan Doucette and Neil Matheson. The film will screen at the Edmonton International Film Festival 7:30 p.m. Thursday, October 4, and Vancouver International Film Festival 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 10 and 9:15 p.m. Thursday, October 11, 2012.
