15 Oct Brian Downey comes home to Newfoundland with Shandi Mitchell’s feature The Disappeared

After a successful run at festivals across Canada, The Disappeared plays in Newfoundland and Labrador at the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival 9:30 p.m. Friday, October 19.The Disappeared tells the story of six men and their struggle to get home after their fishing boat sinks in the North Atlantic. Actor Brian Downey will be returning to his hometown to present this film, along with its Director and Writer Shandi Mitchell.

“Coming home with a film about some of the people who made Newfoundland great, is the most special gift I could ever imagine,” states Brian Downey. “Every Newfoundlander has a debt to the sea. Being part of this film is, in some small way, a means to say, thank you for what you endure, thank you for your courage.”

Coincidently the film will screen at the LSPU, the first place Downey performed. Since those early beginnings, Downey has played in over 100 stage plays, radio dramas, commercials and veritable multitude of TV and film productions including the lead role in the popular sci-fi series Lexx. Recently he won Best Actor award at the 2010 Atlantic Film Festival for Whirligig and dominated as the villain Drake in Hobo with a Shotgun. Watch for him soon as preacher Taggart in Copperhead.

The Disappeared cast also includes Hollywood actor Billy Campbell and Labrador born Canadian star Shawn Doyle alongside Halifax actors Gary Levert, Ryan Doucette and Neil Matheson.

Shandi Mitchell will be in attendance at the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival, leading a directing workshop in advance of the Friday night screening.

Pre-sold to Astral’s The Movie Network and Corus Entertainment’s Movie Central, The Disappeared was produced with the participation of Telefilm Canada, Film Nova Scotia and the Canadian and Nova Scotia tax credit programs, and was developed with added support from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage.

The Disappeared is produced by Gilles Bélanger, Ralph Holt, Walter Forsyth and Karen Franklin.
